Artist’s Statement

I am fascinated with the power of objects to contain memory. I grew up in a military family whose yearly moving vans held a familiar store of well-loved objects, bits and pieces that traveled with us from post to post. Many of these articles- much-handled, treasured, and passed on- have become subjects for my paintings.

In my studio, objects such as dolls, clothes, handkerchiefs, and figurines, have taken on a life of their own, and speak a compelling language. They have provided a rich motif for the claims of memory. As I investigate the intertwine of past and present, the things I paint become metaphors for my personal history.

My intention is to find the human spirit infused in the objects, and to evoke a sense of poignancy, isolation, and unfinished agendas. The small, personal, universes of the paintings suspend the laws of time, suggesting a stage set deserted by its actors. What role did these props play in the forgotten drama? Vibrant color, soft edges, and large scale lend clues as to the plot. Not as a detective, but as an artist, I set out to explore with paint the mysteries of memory.
